New Release: Spancil Hill, by Old Man Fergus
‘Spancil Hill’, the debut single from Old Man Fergus (aka: Eef van Thoen), is now available worldwide via Friendly Folk Records, with release date of Friday 4/September/2020. Every success begins with taking that first small step, as they say. After nearly twenty-five years of dedication to the art of Irish story telling, Eef has gone from a small step to a giant leap with recording and release of his first Irish traditional, ‘Spancil Hill’.
Years of lessons and performances landed Eef a tour with Irish legends, The Fureys as support act, and now he is often a guest in The Fureys family. Old Man Fergus performs regularly in the Netherlands at clubs, pubs, festivals and private parties. He has been named as one of the Irish traditional ambassadors by Irish Embassy in The Hague, Netherlands, and has appeared at embassy sponsored events. Having started his music career at the age of 45, it was with hard work and perserverance that Eef has brought his passion of Irish music to the point of this first worldwide debut release. At age of 68 years young, this lends proof to the saying, ‘you’re never too old to live your dream’. Friendly Folk Records are proud to be a part of this Artist’s dream. Congratulations Old Man Fergus on this milestone.
About the song…
Spancil hill tells the story of emigration to America. It tells of the longing an imigrant has for his home in Spancil hill in the County Clare, Ireland. The name Spancil hill comes from the acient horse fair that takes place every june 23. Spancil hill is a hill and adjacent settlement. The Hamlet was on the green fair which is still the site of the horse market, Irelands oldest horse fair. No Irish sing-along is complete without a rendention of this beautiful traditional ballad, composed in 1870 by Michael Considine.
